New Data Collection: The South Carolina Gazette

Charleston, South Carolina was founded as Charlestown around 1670 and soon became a major seaport and one of the major entry points for people immigrating to Colonial America.

The South Carolina Gazette was begun in 1732 under J. Whitemarsh in Charlestown, and was South Carolina's first successful newspaper. The collection contains a wealth of information on Colonial/Early American History and Genealogy, and provides an accurate glimpse of life in South Carolina and America during the early days of this country. Publication was suspended for several months in 1733 and 1734, and the paper released its final issue in December, 1775.
